Scientists are looking at other ways and means to produce oil on the scale and quality that can currently be drilled. However this is a costly and often gross exercise. They have gone as far as producing oil by processing millions of cockroaches, not a very pleasant thought. However if they do not research these things then we may soon run out of a very well needed resource.
Although you can derive oil from various seeds like sunflower and canola as well as grape seed, this is highly expensive. If you were able to use the likes of sunflower oil over crude oil you'd be looking at an incredible price gap! If crude oil is $100 per gallon then sunflower oil would most likely be $300 if not more. This pricing is inaccurate but goes to show that other resources would indeed cost more.
This does not mean that the substandard crude is forsaken. It is not environmentally friendly to just dump substandard grade. At the rate the crude is being pumped and used, soon it will all be gone. Scientists have been working on many other ways to "farm" oil in a pure and cost effective way. If people do not become more conscious of their usage they may soon find themselves in great need with no supply.
